The Power of Oil Gritting for Glowing Skin by Krishika Bhatia

I've been seeing a new skincare trend all over my social media feed lately, and it's got me curious. The technique is called oil gritting, which everyone's talking about, and I can't help but wonder if it's worth all the hype. People swear by it, claiming it leaves their skin looking radiant and smooth. But I'm a bit skeptical. I mean, we've all fallen for skincare fads before, only to be disappointed in the end. Still, I can't help but be intrigued. Maybe oil gritting is the real deal – the holy grail of skincare we've all been waiting for. But what exactly is oil gritting, and does it truly deliver on its promises? Let's uncover the truth behind this trend with the help of experts.

What is Oil Gritting?

Oil gritting is a skincare practice that involves using oil-based products to deeply cleanse the skin and eradicate impurities or 'grits' like blackheads and clogged pores. The process entails massaging a specific type of oil, often mineral oil or oil-based cleansers, onto the face for 10 to 15 minutes in circular motions until tiny gritty particles emerge. "These grits are a mix of hardened sebum, dead skin cells, and debris that can clog pores and lead to blackheads or congested skin", explains Dr. Niti Gaur, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist Founder of Citrine Clinic. However, it's crucial to follow up with a clay mask to prevent over-stripping the skin of its natural oils.

What Are the Benefits of Oil Gritting?

Deep cleansing effectively purges the pores of excess oil, dirt, and impurities, resulting in clearer, smoother skin. The gentle massage involved in oil gritting aids in exfoliation, sloughing off dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and improving skin texture and tone. Additionally, by thoroughly cleansing the pores and eliminating debris, oil gritting may help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and gently remove sebaceous filaments, thereby minimizing pore size. Furthermore, many oil-based cleansers used in this technique contain hydrating ingredients that leave the skin feeling soft, supple, and refreshed, ensuring optimal hydration

How to Oil Grit

Begin by selecting the right oil suited to your skin type. "Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like rosehip oil, jojoba oil, hemp or argan oil," says Dr. Jaya Pathak, Chief of Dermatology and Operations at Potenza Wellness. After thoroughly cleansing your skin, apply a few drops of the chosen oil and massage it onto your face, focusing on congested areas. Follow this with a gentle exfoliator to lift away softened impurities, then wipe off the oil and exfoliator with a soft, damp cloth or cotton pads.

Does It Work?

Contrary to popular belief, the gritty particles expelled during this process are often just clusters of dead skin cells rather than blackheads or sebaceous filaments. Some experts suggest that similar results can be achieved through regular cleansing and massage without the need for extended oil gritting sessions.

Proceed with Caution

"Overdoing oil gritting or using harsh techniques can irritate the skin and potentially damage the skin barrier," says Dr. Niti.

Extended sessions and frequent exfoliation may compromise the skin barrier, resulting in dryness and increased sensitivity. "Heavy oils can aggravate acne and aggressive extractions can leave marks or scars", adds Dr. Jaya. For those with delicate skin, experts recommend alternative methods such as using cleansing oils or products containing salicylic acid and retinoids to unclog pores.
