JJ Valaya Debuts A Handbag Line, With The Raj–Jagjit Bag Inspired By His Parents

Known as the king of chevron, JJ Valaya's intricate attention to detail, impeccable craftsmanship and celebration of heritage have made him one of the most renowned Indian designers. While his couture collections and maximalist approach inspire us, this year the designer decided to create a new category. that world," said the designer. He views a handbag as a piece of the Valaya universe beyond couture that individuals can carry. This was the starting point for his debut handbag line.

In the collection, one bag stands out, the Raj — Jagjit, a design dedicated to his parents."My parents have been the most defining influence in my life, both personally and emotionally. Naming the bags after them was instinctive — it felt like the most honest way to begin this chapter of the brand." Created as a tribute to the designer’s parents, the bag represents protection and companionship; the larger Jagjit bag gently holds the smaller Raj bag within it. His father was an armyman, with immense strength, structure and quiet authority, which translated into an architectural discipline in the design. Valaya's mother, on the other hand, embodied warmth, elegance and refinement, which brings a softer, more graceful dimension to the collection.

The Raj is fully embellished with intricate embroidery in crystals, zari, resham, and sequins over a quilted base inspired by handwoven shikaargah carpets. Compact and refined, it features a zipper closure and inner pockets and can be detached for individual use. The Jagjit is structured and leather-quilted with the signature chevron design and is defined by a distinctive chain-loop closure and an adjustable handle with buckle ends.

What makes it unique is its detachable design. The smaller Raj bag sits inside the larger Jagjit bag and is connected with a turn-lock mechanism. Both bags can be used together as one statement bag or separated and carried individually, giving you two different bag sizes in a single design. These bags are the designer's way of paying tribute to his parents' grace, their strength, and the quiet values they instilled in him. "Together they represent balance, and that duality is embedded in the way these bags are conceived," he concludes. The bags have strong shapes, intricate detailing, timelessness and cultural richness. But they are expressed through a more contemporary and understated lens. One that we call the signature Valay vocabulary, and the Raj–Jagjit Bag brings together traditional craftsmanship with a thoughtful, modern design.

Although his parents remain a source of inspiration, the brand's archives have always fuelled Valaya. "Over the years, we have developed a vast vocabulary of motifs, textures and narratives rooted in India’s royal and cultural histories. Many of those sensibilities find their way into this collection, but distilled and adapted to suit the scale and function of an accessory." While the colour palette moves from neutrals like black, brown and cream to a bold red, olive green and deep maroon, the designs are heritage and opulence but interpreted with restraint. The bags are brought to life with meaningful detailing along with the brand's signature embellishment. "You will see custom Valaya motifs, carefully crafted hardware, rich textures and subtle references to heritage design elements. The idea is to create pieces that feel luxurious through craftsmanship and proportion rather than ornamentation alone."
