The Perfect Fit: Denim Trends We Can’t Stop Thinking About in 2026

Can we all collectively agree that there is no greater joy than finding the perfect pair of jeans? The biggest wardrobe staple is also one of the trickiest things to get right. Comfortable but flattering, easy enough to take from day to night, not too long but definitely not cropped — the list goes on.
Of course, our idea of the perfect fit changes. My 5’2” self is currently the biggest advocate for baggy jeans. They’re comfortable, they’re loose and, most importantly, they don’t feel like a punishment in the summer heat.
But there really is a pair of jeans for every occasion. High-waisted wide-legs with a shirt for an event, skinny jeans with an oversized blazer for that effortless Parisian feel, or Sarah Pidgeon in Love Story making a pretty convincing case for a dark-wash pair of cropped jeans and loafers. Simple, classic and with just enough of that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s 90s appeal.
Denim is having a decidedly less casual moment right now. From the Met Gala 2026 to award shows and press tours, denim is being styled well beyond its everyday roots. Elevated denim looks are the real trend. Let’s take a minute to pay an ode to our favourite pairs of the year.
The Baggy Jean
Baggy jeans aren’t going anywhere, and honestly, I’m not complaining. They’re the pair you reach for when you want to look put together without feeling like you’ve tried too hard. A cute tee, trainers and a good pair of baggy jeans are pretty hard to get wrong; swap the trainers for heels, and suddenly you’re dressed for dinner.
Hailey Bieber seems to agree, and her new collaboration with Gap is a nod to her unapologetic love for the classic. In the collection, the Hailey Jean comes in two relaxed ’90s-inspired styles—Extra Baggy and Low-Rise Loose. Bieber was closely involved in the fit, particularly the length and waist, drawing on the jeans she already wears and has had tailored over the years. The style feels very 2026: relaxed denim, but with enough thought put into the proportions that it doesn’t just look like you borrowed someone else’s jeans.
The ’90s Slim
Skinny jeans may not be making a full comeback, but their slimmer cousin is quietly finding its way back in. Think ’90s cigarette denim, fitted through the waist and hips, then straight from the knee to the ankle.
Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2026 denim made a case for the hybrid shape, with a slightly boxier, slouchier leg and a floor-grazing hem. It has the ease of baggy denim without completely losing the shape of your legs.
It’s a little more fitted, a little more polished and perhaps the easiest way to ease back into slimmer denim without going full skinny jean.
The Low-Rise Bootcut
Low-rise denim is back, but this time it comes with a little more shape. The low-rise bootcut is having a moment, with its fitted thigh and subtle flare feeling far more wearable than the ultra-low, ultra-wide jeans of the early 2000s.

Charli XCX made a case for the silhouette on the VMAs 2026 stage, while Emma Corrin, Nicola Peltz Beckham and Suki Waterhouse have all been spotted in variations of the style. It works particularly well with a fitted top, giving the jeans a ’90s feel without looking like a costume from the decade.
The Puddle Jean
I’ll admit, I wasn’t immediately convinced by jeans that practically sweep the floor. But add a peep-toe heel underneath and suddenly the whole look feels very put together.
Puddle jeans have been getting longer, looser and more exaggerated, with Halle Berry and Riley Keough both making a case for the silhouette with heels. The trick is in the styling: when the rest of the look is polished, the deliberately oversized denim feels much more considered. And if there’s one denim colour I’m keeping an eye on this year, it’s deep, inky indigo. The darker wash makes even the most relaxed pair feel a little more polished, which is exactly what this trend needs.
The Classic Straight
Some jeans don’t need a comeback. The straight-leg jean has been quietly doing its thing for decades, and Sienna Miller’s vintage Levi’s 501s, worn with a vintage Lou Reed T-shirt and strappy sandals, are proof that the formula still works.
Knowing the trends is one thing, finding the pair you actually want to wear is another. From relaxed baggy fits to dark indigo and ’90s-inspired silhouettes, these are the five pairs we’d be adding to our wardrobes this year.
As someone who is five-feet-something, I know length is just as important as fit. I’ve had some of my favourite jeans altered by a tailor because the perfect pair isn’t always the one that fits well straight off the rack. Where the hem falls on your shoe, the rise, even the placement of the pockets can completely change how a pair looks. So no, I don’t think being petite means you have to always live in “petite jeans”. Sometimes the perfect fit just needs a tiny adjustment. It’s also the shape that reminds us that great denim is less about following every trend and more about finding what works for you. Alia Bhatt, Levi’s global brand ambassador, has described jeans as something you “live in and make your own”, and that feels particularly true here.
