The Comeback of Jacquard Designs in Modern Interiors

ree

Somewhere between vintage charm and contemporary flair, jacquard designs are making a quiet but powerful comeback in our homes. They’re not loud or flashy, yet they capture your attention, a familiar pattern you may have once seen in your grandmother’s tapestry, now reimagined in modern form, from throws and rugs to sleek furniture and coffee table accents.

But what exactly is jacquard? The story of Jacquard begins back in the early 19th century when Joseph Marie Jacquard invented a loom that could weave complex patterns directly into fabric. It was revolutionary. Unlike simple weaves, jacquard allows for intricate designs—florals, geometrics, scenes, and textures—all embedded into the textile itself rather than being printed or embroidered. Over time, jacquard became synonymous with opulence, detail, and craftsmanship.

Fast forward to today, and it’s no longer just the fabric of royal curtains or antique upholstery. This year, jacquard has found its way back into our homes and not in a timid way. The colourful home interiors have highlighted the comeback of jacquard designs this year, which finds beauty in imperfection and transience. From a neutral taupe setting to an eclectic maximalist room, these designs are seen everywhere from throws to wall paintings.

As Sahil Jain, Co-Founder of Studio Abrash, shares, “Jacquard designs have truly made a comeback, not just in style, but in how versatile they’ve become. The Jacquard loom allows us to craft detailed, expressive patterns at an approachable price point.”

What really makes them stand out? Is it the striking, unique patterns or captivating geometric shapes? These jacquard designs are calling out your name, and you should see it for yourself.

From traditional motifs to scenic visuals, jacquard works across design genres - classic, transitional, and contemporary. Shrutee Jain, Co-Founder, Studio Abrash.

Throws and Cushions

Drawing inspiration from the fun and bold colours, these jacquard throws are being noticed by every home decor enthusiast. Be it in oversized flowers on a neutral-toned fleece throw or a gingham design woven around the borders of a cushion. The striking repetition of shapes adds the missing touch to the couch. You can even place it on the bed and lay it with a fashion coffee table book for the perfect aesthetics. Style it neatly folded or casually layered, the designs draw every eye in the room.

Wall Art and Posters

Prints and posters are multiplying in every corner of the room. The biggest home decor trend this year has been creating a corner with Stockholm-inspired decor items that come together as a whole when accentuated with a large frame on the ground or a few smaller frames on the wall. Honeycomb and Herringbone weaves are the most common jacquard designs seen framed. Paired in contrasting colours from black and white, green and pink, purple and yellow to orange and blue. Bonus point, these act as a 3D effect!

Coffee Table Books and Surface Layers

Even in styling coffee tables and shelves, jacquard is entering in subtle ways, textile-bound books with embossed or woven covers, or jacquard-covered boxes acting as sculptural objects. The idea is layering texture without clutter.

Side Tables and Ottomans

Surprisingly, jacquard has its way with furniture detailing. We’re seeing small side tables with jacquard-patterned fabric wrapped around cylindrical bases or used as soft cladding behind frosted glass. It's been seen lately and largely that some contemporary brands are introducing these designs as a form of textile marquetry, paired with matte wood or stone to create sculptural hybrids that sit effortlessly in minimalist corners.

Rugs

Jacquard rugs are becoming a favourite canvas for showcasing intricate, handwoven patterns that feel custom yet accessible. From traditional florals to bold geometrics, they’re showing up in layered corners, under curved lamps, or around glass top furniture with quiet confidence. The hallmark of a jacquard rug is its intricate, loom-woven design, made possible by the Jacquard loom. Unlike standard weaving, this technique allows each warp thread to be controlled individually, enabling complex patterns with depth and detail. This precision gives jacquard rugs their signature richness and character. With their rich tactility and adaptable aesthetic, jacquard rugs offer a grounded, character-driven layer to modern interiors.

Sofas and Armchairs

Nothing steals the spotlight quite like a jacquard sofa in a living space. From softly faded florals to patchwork-style geometrics. A curved chair in dusty olive and pink embroidery or a bold two-seater in black and cream chevron is enough to make a corner feel instantly designed. What makes them special is how they manage to look vintage yet trending all at once. You’ll often find them styled next to glossy side tables, coloured glass vases, or with a fringed cushion thrown on top for that “found it at a European flea market” look. Place one against a lime-washed wall, layer a textured rug underneath, and the space doesn’t need much else.
