Is Skin Flooding a Summer Skincare Win Or a Pore-Clogging Mistake?

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk about “skin flooding” in the skincare world. The technique of layering hydrating products to achieve soft, glowing skin has gained plenty of attention, and for good reason. But now that the weather’s warmer and humidity levels are rising, many are starting to wonder, Is this method still helpful in summer, or could it be doing more harm than good?
What Is Skin Flooding?
Skin flooding is all about moisture. Think of it like drenching your skin with hydration by layering lightweight, water-loving products back-to-back. The routine usually starts after cleansing on damp skin with a hydrating toner or mist. Then comes a serum packed with humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Last step? Lock it all in with a moisturiser. The idea is to trap that hydration before it disappears, leaving your skin soft, bouncy, and glowing. In winter, especially when skin feels tight and dry, this can be a total game-changer.
Here’s where things can get complicated. In the summer, the air tends to be more humid, and your skin produces more oil. While this natural increase in moisture may seem beneficial, it can actually lead to clogged pores and breakouts when combined with sweat, sunscreen, and pollution. Layering too many products, especially heavy ones, can trap oil and sweat beneath the skin, resulting in clogged pores and unexpected pimples. So, does that mean skin flooding should be ditched in summer? Not quite.

Skin Flooding For The Summer Months
During summer months, you don’t have to give up on this routine completely, instead you just ned to tweak it a bit. Here’s how to keep the benefits without overwhelming your skin:
Go lighter: Swap out thick creams for a gel-based moisturiser. Think featherlight, not buttery.
Cut the layers: You don’t need five steps. A hydrating mist, a serum, and a light moisturiser will do.
Skip heavy stuff in the day: Ingredients like petroleum and balms can sit too heavy when it’s hot.
Do it at night instead: Your skin isn’t battling heat and sun while you sleep, making it the perfect time to flood without fear.
“If your skin is less oily or acne-prone, be extra picky. Look for non-comedogenic formulas and test how your skin responds before going all in. By choosing lighter products and trimming down the layers, you can still enjoy that healthy, hydrated glow without overwhelming your skin,” added Ms. Janvi Bangia, Director, Beauty & Medical Expert, ViVi Aesthetics & Wellness
If your face starts to feel heavy, oily, or irritated, take it as a cue to simplify. Skincare is personal, and what works for one season or one person might not work for another. In the summer, hydration should feel refreshing, not suffocating. Let your skin guide you.
