From Alia Bhatt’s Sabyasachi Floral Saree To Zendaya’a Givenchy Gown, The Best Dressed Celebrities at The Met Gala 2024

Met Gala 2024

It’s the first Monday of May, and you know what that means: celebrities, designers, and stylists are gathering together to celebrate fashion's biggest night, The Met Gala 2024. This year’s exhibit, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion examines how technology can breathe new life into garments that are too old and fragile to be worn again. Championing the theme Garden of Time, the red carpet saw many usual attendees return bringing glamour and artistry to the forefront.

From sartorial sweeping trains to a focus on florals and techno-inspired fashion, celebrities and stylists move away from lace and corsets bringing to life the theme. Renowned Indian personalities like Alia Bhatt and Isha Ambani stole the show in custom couture by leading Indian designers and Gaurv Gupta couture made its Met Gala debut. However, Zendaya’s second look, a John Galliano gown styled with an Alexander McQueen floral hat was hands down the best for us. Here is a round-up of the best-dressed celebrities at the Met Gala 2024, and check back in for live updates.

Zendaya in Maison Margiela by John Galliano and Vintage Givenchy by John Galliano

After a five-year hiatus, Zendaya returned to the Met Gala 2024 red carpet. She chose not one but two looks for the red carpet tonight. The first was a blue and black organza Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. The haute couture silhouette was inspired by the 1930s mythological works of the photographer Madame Yevonde and imbued with the memory of the orgiastic sceneries of the bacchanals of Ancient Greece. The emerald green and electric blue gown is a custom design made of organza and sage-hued lamé crafted of a corset of duchess satin, with hand-painted metallic details, a drape and a bow layered from aluminium and iridescent organza, and finished with a hand-embroidered corsage.

When she took to the Met steps for a second time tonight, this time she wore a statement-making floral headpiece. It tulle-wrapped bouquet atop her head, designed by Philip Tracy in 2006 for Alexander McQueen and a custom Givenchy gown by John Galliano. The dress consists of a corseted lace-up bodice and a flowing skirt.

The outfit looked to the past as a guide for the future, drawing inspiration from the timeless sophistication of Indian nobility. The saree highlighted intricate craftsmanship, incorporating hand embroidery, and precious stones, along with elegant beadwork and fringes, distinctive of the 1920’s fringe style. Our colour palette pays homage to nature’s beauty, echoing the earth, sky, and sea.

Anna Wintor in LOEWE

Anna Wintour surprised fashion fans when she walked the red carpet in a custom version of a Loewe fall-winter 2024 ensemble that consisted of a fitted long-sleeve white gown and a dramatic floral coat adorned with flowers. Inspired by a circa 1944 evening cape by 20th-century designer Charles James and tailoring from the LOEWE Fall Winter 2024 women’s collection, Anna’s tuxedo in wool with a silk satin shawl collar is decorated with floral motifs using hand-dyed feathers, tonal beading, and pearl embroidery. The jacket is paired with a long-sleeved dress in bias-cut silk satin.

Mindy Kaling in Gaurav Gupta

Mindy Kaling has arrived on the Met Gala red carpet dressed in Gaurav Gupta. The cosmic swirls are very striking and her dress is named the Melting Flower of time. “Mindy radiates grace, making her the ideal muse for this design. Just as a flower blooms only once before withering away, this gown embodies the transient yet exquisite essence of style. It’s almost like the gown Mindy is wearing melts away in time, evoking a surreal journey through loops of infinity, as represented by our brand logo,” said the designer Gaurav Gupta.

Ariana Grande in Loewe

For her grand return, Grande chose to wear a sweeping, white strapless gown designed by Loewe. The dress featured some stunning details, including a shimmery mother-of-pearl constructed corset bodice and a matching back bow. Grande also experimented with her makeup for the evening, going for a more natural look and adding dainty butterflies on the sides of her eyes.

Kim K in Maison Margiela

Kim Kardashian's Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano the haute couture silhouette was inspired by the symbiotic love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and her jewellery. It featured an exfoliate skirt hand-wired in a ‘filigrading’ of silver metal formations of lace, flowers, leaves and sprigs interlinked with silver chain and floral motifs cut from mirror fragments, and bedecked with crystal pendants, pearls and clasped jewellery. A new technique, ‘filigrading’ – a portmanteau of filigree and ‘retrograding’ – evolves, through hand-wired metalwork, the practice of ‘retrograding’ which denotes a dégradé of thread-work, appliqué or encrustation. Over a thousand hours in the making, the hand-embroidered form was crafted to refract the light in the manner of jewellery. The haute couture skirt advances the cutting technique of ‘exfoliage’ through which the top layer of a garment such as a dress is seductively déshabillé-draped over the front of a skirt, essentially exfoliating one garment to create a type of foliage within another.

Kylie Jenner in Oscar de la Renta

Keeping it classic, simple and minimal, Kylie Jenner arrived at the met gala 2024 carpet in a sculptural rosewater double-faced satin gown by Oscar De La Renta. Truth be told, we expected better.

Isha Ambani in Rahul Mishra

For the Met Gala 2024 Isha Ambani wore a custom Rahul Mishra saree gown which took over 10,000 hours to complete. Delicate samples of flowers, butterflies, and dragonflies were meticulously integrated from the archives into the design, via distinct applique and embroidery techniques, such as Fareesha, Zardozi, Nakshi, and Dabka, as well as French knots. Together, all of these elements carry a powerful narrative about the state of the planet and offer a message of hope and rebirth.
