The Art of Elaborate Table Settings

Creating a captivating table setting is much like accessorizing your home – it may not be strictly necessary, but it undeniably sets the tone for your living space. Setting the table goes beyond mere etiquette; crafting an atmosphere that enhances the dining experience for you and your guests. A thoughtfully arranged table not only makes a meal memorable but also amplifies the pleasure of enjoying a well-prepared dish.

There's something undeniably opulent about a meticulously styled dinner table. Often overlooked, serveware plays a crucial role in elevating even the simplest of meals. Whether hosting a high-tea soiree or an intimate dinner party, the right serveware – from earthenware to bone china – can add a boutique appeal to your culinary creations. From opulent, gold-plated cutlery and crockery to lavish platters, coffee mugs, tea sets, and cake stands, choosing the right pieces allows you to serve in style and impress your guests.

There is a saying that the fondest memories are made when gathered around the table, feels Aditi Agarwal, Co-Founder of Nestasia, and we couldn’t agree. According to her, “Before we found ourselves consumed by technology, dinner time was something one always looked forward to. It was all about sharing time and food with family and discussing the day’s routine. However, now special occasions are when one builds a bank of memories and comes together to share the happiness and joys of life.”

The selection of cutlery and crockery is an essential element of fine dining. As Sonal Jetha, Co-Founder & CEO of Kaunteya, notes, "In recent years, we've seen a significant influence of Western culture in our table settings. High table settings, inspired by European traditions, have become increasingly popular. Whereas good food was once the main focus, today, the presentation and the use of fine crockery and cutlery have become just as important."

Selecting a theme

Both Jetha and Agarwal agree that a table-setting theme should reflect the season, occasion, and guests. Agarwal suggests, "When planning a theme, consider the season or event. For a spring gathering, use seasonal flowers, matching napkins, and crockery that complement the theme. For birthdays or anniversaries, if the weather is nice, you could even celebrate outdoors with floral decorations and delicious food."

Jetha adds, "The theme should align with the weather, occasion, or guests. During the monsoon, bright pastels can help brighten up the atmosphere. You could also use colourful, decorative umbrellas to create a monsoon vibe. For a beach party, go for a coastal feel with paper boats, shells, and sand. For festive dinners, fresh local flowers like genda and champa, paired with vibrant table runners, mats, and napkins, can create a lively and celebratory setting."

Anandita Kothari, founder of Plate & Peonie, believes that choosing the right theme is key to creating a stunning table setting. She shares, "One of our favourite themes is an earthy tropical soirée. It’s a beautiful blend of playful and natural elements with a touch of elegance and sophistication." To achieve this look, she suggests starting with a woven rattan or abaca placemat and a neutral acacia wood charger plate. "From there, you can paint the canvas any way you want," she says, whether it's with safari-printed plates or designs inspired by nature and greens. Kothari also recommends adding whimsical accents like striped bee cocktail picks, coasters, and a sparkling butterfly napkin holder to bring a bit of glamour to the table. She adds, "Style your centrepiece with whimsical greens and florals, textured vases, and candle holders—play around with height and colour to make your table truly stand out."

Sonal Jetha of Kaunteya believes that the table setting should enhance the food, not overshadow it. She advises, "Bring out your best dining set, cutlery, and accessories like napkins, napkin rings, and mats. Keep extra cutlery handy on the table. The right music is also important—light, soft music helps create a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for long conversations while you enjoy your meal. On the other hand, hip-hop music energises the room and makes you eat more quickly, so it's better suited for buffets."

Adding to this, Ambereen Gupta, Co-founder of ISQ, says, "Centrepieces are the highlight of your dining table. A grand centrepiece brings the magic needed to set a fine dining experience. Whether it's flowers, candlestands, or elegant crockery and cutlery, everything together showcases your aesthetic taste and attention to detail."

How to Create The Perfect Table Setting

Shuchita Sancheti Garg, Founder and Brand Director of vVyom By Shuchita, shares her tips on transforming your dining experience with vibrant spring-summer table layouts. "Table mats crafted from bamboo with felt lining are not only functional but stylish too. They're water-resistant, anti-skid, and easy to clean, making them perfect for daily use," she explains. Shuchita suggests incorporating bright colours and playful floral prints to uplift the ambience, adding, "Striking aluminium trays with hand-painted designs can really make your table pop with personality."

For an artistic touch, she recommends pairing these trays with printed cotton tableware featuring signature hand-painted prints. "Complete the look with ceramic cups and saucers, each hand-painted and baked to perfection, to bring elegance to your table. And to tie it all together, brass spoons with a matte gold finish add a touch of charm to your setup," she advises. "Embrace the season with these exquisite table layouts, where every detail celebrates the joy of dining in style."

When it comes to setting a sit-down table, especially in the traditional Indian style, simplicity and elegance are key. Krsnaa Mehta, founder of India Circus, shares his tips for creating a sophisticated yet authentic table setting. "Sit-down tables are a staple in many Asian and Indian households, and they're definitely making a comeback," says Mehta. Given that traditional Indian dining often involves eating with hands, it's important to keep the table uncluttered. "For a chic and sophisticated look, we focus on a minimalist design with floral and foliage decorations," he advises.

Adding table mats and runners is an easy way to enhance the ambience. Mehta suggests using dinner plates that combine elegance with tradition, adding a touch of luxury to your setting. "Incorporate copper tumblers and consider adding incense or fragrant candles to create a pleasant atmosphere. To make sitting on the floor more comfortable, use cushions or mats that maintain the traditional feel of your table." For a truly traditional Indian table, don't limit yourself to marigolds or hibiscus. Orchids and tuberoses also offer a beautiful and authentic touch.

Thus, a thoughtfully curated table setting in your dining experience adds an extra layer of sophistication and enjoyment. By carefully selecting serveware, themes, and accessories, you create a memorable ambience that enhances both the presentation of your food and the overall dining experience. Whether it's a grand occasion or a simple gathering, a beautifully set table transforms every meal into a special event, leaving a lasting impression on your guests and making each moment around the table truly unforgettable.
