PDRN Is the Regenerative Skincare Ingredient Taking Over This Season — Here’s Why Dermatologists Want You to Know About It

From skin boosters and post-facial recovery to barrier repair serums lining K-beauty shelves, one ingredient has quietly become the biggest talking point in regenerative dermatology right now: PDRN. Often referred to as “salmon DNA therapy,” PDRN is moving beyond trend status and becoming a serious dermat-backed treatment for healthier, stronger, more resilient skin.
Unlike ingredients that focus on quick fixes or surface-level glow, PDRN works at a cellular level — helping the skin repair, regenerate, and function better over time. And as the beauty industry shifts towards long-term skin health, collagen banking, and subtle rejuvenation, dermatologists say it’s an ingredient worth paying attention to.
What Is PDRN?
PDRN stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide, a bioactive compound typically derived from salmon DNA. Interestingly, it was first used in Korea (medically) for wound healing and tissue repair, and eventually made its way into aesthetic medicine and skincare for its powerful regenerative properties.
“PDRN has emerged as a significant bioactive in regenerative dermatology primarily because it works beyond surface-level correction and instead targets skin repair at a cellular level,” explains Dr Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy, Managing Director and Founder of Skin and You Clinic. Its mechanism is receptor-mediated, meaning it helps calm inflammation, stimulate tissue repair, support collagen production, and improve overall skin function. In simpler terms, it encourages the skin to heal itself better.
Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
The skincare conversation has noticeably shifted from Botox and laser treatments to invasive treatments such as PDRN injections. Instead of aggressive treatments and dramatic transformations, patients are increasingly looking for subtle, natural-looking results that prioritise skin quality and longevity. These treatments move away from artificial, puffed-up balloon appearances, making them more appealing.
According to Dr Prachi B. Bodkhe, MD, Dermatologist at Salon & Aesthetics, "PDRN works by supporting tissue repair. It improves hydration, reduces inflammation and stimulates collagen production. It is commonly used for dull skin, fine lines, under-eye rejuvenation and improving overall skin quality. " Bodkhe opinions that topical PDRN in the form of serums and creams can help with hydration, barrier repair and mild glow enhancement. However, for the results to show, consistency is key.
“PDRN supports the skin’s natural reparative processes, so it is not a treatment for someone expecting overnight transformation,” explains Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director, YAVANA Skin & Hair Clinic. “Patients usually begin noticing visible improvements after two to three sessions, including smoother texture, refined pores, reduced blemishes, and improved radiance.” According to her, most people are advised to undergo three to four sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every four to six months for sustained results.
Highlighting the importance of aftercare and safety, Dr Madhuri Agarwal says, “PDRN treatments are most effective when combined with a comprehensive skincare routine that includes sunscreen, a gentle cleanser, and a good moisturiser.” She also notes that although allergic reactions are uncommon, individuals with fish or seafood allergies should exercise caution, as PDRN is commonly derived from salmon. “Serious complications are exceedingly rare when procedures are performed by a qualified dermatologist in a sterile clinical environment. Before starting treatment, a detailed clinical evaluation with a board-certified dermatologist is essential to determine suitability and set realistic expectations regarding results and timelines,” she adds.
What Are the Benefits? The benefits of PDRN are multiple. While many skincare ingredients focus primarily on hydration, PDRN goes deeper by strengthening the skin’s internal scaffolding. It supports collagen and elastin synthesis, helping skin appear firmer, smoother, and more refined over time. The results are gradual rather than instant — but often longer-lasting and more natural-looking.
One of the most clinically relevant benefits of PDRN is its anti-inflammatory action, which makes it particularly useful for sensitive or reactive skin. For concerns such as rosacea, redness, and compromised skin barrier function, PDRN helps regulate inflammatory pathways and improve skin resilience over time. “It suppresses inflammatory cytokines, making it an exceptional ingredient for calming inflammaging — the chronic low-grade inflammation that accelerates skin ageing,” says Jenovia Daun Jung, Co-founder & COO of KorinMi Professional.
Dermatologists are increasingly using PDRN post-procedure to accelerate healing and reduce downtime after treatments like lasers and microneedling. By stimulating fibroblast activity, it promotes collagen synthesis and extracellular matrix remodelling, which improves skin texture, elasticity, and structural integrity. “PDRN significantly reduces downtime by cooling thermal damage and soothing redness,” adds Jung.
Though PDRN is not a direct depigmenting ingredient, dermatologists say it plays a supportive role in managing melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation. By calming inflammation and regulating pigment-related pathways, it can improve the overall efficacy of targeted pigmentation treatments while helping strengthen the skin barrier.
Lastly, dark circles caused by thin skin, poor circulation, or compromised skin quality are another area where PDRN is showing promising results. According to Dr Geeta Mehra Fazalbhoy, PDRN helps stimulate angiogenesis and improve local blood flow, thereby gradually enhancing oxygenation and strengthening the under-eye area. The result is healthier-looking skin with improved texture and reduced hollowness or dullness over time.

Why You Should Ask Your Dermatologist About It?
Now let's be honest, PDRN is not a one-size-fits-all miracle ingredient — and that’s exactly why dermatologists recommend approaching it through professional guidance.
Depending on your concerns, your dermatologist may suggest injectable PDRN skin boosters, PDRN combined with microneedling, post-laser recovery protocols, under-eye rejuvenation treatments or barrier-repair skincare with topical PDRN,
“In clinical practice, PDRN is typically administered through meso injections or alongside microneedling for deeper delivery and better bioavailability,” explains Dr. Bindu Sthalekar. She also notes that topical PDRN products are becoming increasingly popular as maintenance products that help extend results and support ongoing repair.
The Rise of Regenerative K-Beauty Products
PDRN’s popularity has also been fuelled by the rise of regenerative K-beauty — skincare focused on long-term skin health rather than instant cosmetic correction. “PDRN is the ultimate recovery tool for modern skin,” says Jenovia Daun Jung, Co-founder & COO of KorinMi Professional. “It’s not just about looking better today; it’s about ensuring your skin has the biological strength to thrive years from now.”
She recommends looking for formulations with low-molecular-weight PDRN or liposomal delivery systems for better absorption, especially when paired with hydrating and barrier-supportive ingredients like ceramides, peptides, and panthenol.
