Coco Shambhala

📍 Sindhudurg, Maharashtra

Set along the untouched Konkan coastline, Coco Shambhala feels less like a hotel and more like a quiet world of its own. Arrival is an experience in itself—grand doors open to reveal a lush, green landscape, where a red laterite stone pathway gently leads you into nature. Conceived by Giles Knapton, whose deep connection to India shapes the soul of the retreat, Coco Shambhala is designed to exist in harmony with its surroundings rather than stand apart from it.

With just four private two-bedroom villas, the property is intentionally intimate. There is no central reception, no shared spaces—every moment unfolds within the privacy of your own villa. Each one is designed with open-plan living, high ceilings, and open-air lounges that flow into private infinity pools overlooking the sea or dense greenery. Rooted in contemporary tropical architecture inspired by the Konkan region, the design uses natural materials, earthy tones, and artisanal details to create a space that feels calm, grounded, and deeply connected to nature.

The villas—named Arka, Amaresha, Inaya, and Varenya—carry a quiet sense of identity, each reflecting elements of Indian culture and philosophy. Interiors are minimal yet warm, with handcrafted furniture, coconut wood finishes, terracotta accents, and soft linens. Thoughtful touches—from copper tumblers to recycled lighting—add to the sense of understated luxury, while solar panels reinforce the retreat’s eco-conscious approach.

Life here moves gently. Wake up to birdsong and the sound of waves, spend afternoons by the pool, and end the day under starlit skies. Dining is entirely personalised, with in-house chefs curating meals around fresh, local ingredients and coastal flavours—from Konkani dishes to global favourites—served wherever you choose, from your villa to a private beach setup.

Experiences at Coco Shambhala are immersive yet unhurried. From private beach picnics and sea foraging to snorkelling, dolphin spotting, and deep-sea fishing, the coastline offers endless exploration. Guests can hike to nearby forts, discover hidden waterfalls, or take quiet boat rides through mangroves and rivers. Cultural moments—like local art sessions or village walks—bring a deeper sense of place, while wellness experiences, including yoga and nature-led therapies, offer space to slow down.
