Wellesley Hotel

📍 Pune, Maharashtra

Tucked into Pune’s historic Camp neighbourhood, Wellesley Hotel is a 24-room boutique stay designed for travellers who value character, culture, and thoughtful design over traditional luxury. More than just a hotel, Wellesley feels like a gathering space for artists, creatives, curious travellers, and locals, quietly reflecting the layered history and evolving culture of the city around it.

Located on Connaught Road, once Pune’s original hotel strip, the property sits amongst old bakeries, Irani cafés, bookstores, colonial-era buildings, and long-standing local institutions that continue to shape the neighbourhood’s identity. The hotel itself carries decades of history. Originally opened in the 1930s under British management, later renamed Hotel Shalimar, and now thoughtfully revived by Roshan Talera, Wellesley blends old memories with a contemporary cultural energy.

The design feels warm, minimal, and intentionally lived-in. Terrazzo floors, restored railings, black basalt-inspired details, hand-painted ceramics, local artwork, indoor plants, and vintage objects create spaces that feel personal rather than polished. Art runs through every part of the hotel, with works by contemporary Indian artists displayed across corridors, rooms, and common spaces. The mood shifts naturally through the day — from soft morning light and coffee conversations to evenings shaped by music, workshops, and a steady flow of familiar faces.

Accommodation includes 24 rooms and suites across categories including Single, Twin, Double, and Signature Suites. Rooms are simple yet thoughtfully detailed, layered with handcrafted touches, patchwork textiles, dimmable lighting, local pottery, soundproof windows, and toiletries from Indian wellness brands. The Signature Suites each carry distinct personalities, from quiet monochrome spaces to rooms built around private libraries and restored vintage furniture.

At the centre of the property sits Anaaj Bistro, Wellesley’s vegetarian restaurant inspired by conscious eating and seasonal produce. The menu changes through the year, focusing on local ingredients, plant-forward dishes, millets, and fresh produce interpreted in contemporary ways. The dining experience feels relaxed and communal, designed as much around conversation and culture as food itself.

The hotel also houses The General Store, a design-led retail space showcasing objects, ceramics, and homeware by local artisans and independent Indian brands. Experiences at Wellesley range from yoga sessions, Mahjong evenings, Japanese tea ceremonies, and art workshops to guided heritage walks exploring Pune’s colonial history, bakeries, synagogues, cafés, and hidden neighbourhood stories.
