Sukoon Houseboat
📍 Srinagar, Kashmir
Moored quietly on the still waters of Dal Lake and surrounded by the snow-covered Himalayan peaks, Sukoon Houseboat offers one of Kashmir’s most intimate and atmospheric stays. Meaning “peace” or “contentment” in Sufi philosophy, Sukoon lives up to its name through a slow, calming experience that combines old-world Kashmiri charm with thoughtful modern comfort. Floating amidst lotus gardens in a quieter corner of the lake, the restored heritage houseboat allows guests to experience Kashmir from the gentle rhythm of the water itself.
Lovingly restored by owner Altaf Chapri, Sukoon is widely regarded as Kashmir’s first eco-luxury houseboat. The five-bedroom houseboat beautifully blends traditional craftsmanship with colonial-style elegance. Original carved wood panelling, pinewood flooring, vintage chandeliers, whirring ceiling fans, and classic furniture preserve the nostalgia of old Kashmir, while soft linens, colourful silks, modern bathrooms, and understated contemporary touches bring comfort to the experience. Each room features large windows overlooking the lake, allowing guests to wake up to views of floating gardens, misty mountains, and passing shikaras gliding silently across the water.
The houseboat features five elegantly designed rooms, including Standard Rooms and larger Suites with dressing areas. Spacious living rooms, candlelit dining spaces, verandahs, and an open-air sundeck create multiple corners to unwind, whether with a cup of traditional Kashmiri kahwa, a book overlooking the lake, or a quiet sunset drink on the terrace.
Dining at Sukoon celebrates both Kashmiri and continental cuisine, with meals thoughtfully prepared using fresh ingredients and local flavours. Guests can enjoy traditional dishes while watching the ever-changing life on Dal Lake unfold around them — from floating flower sellers and fishermen to children paddling to school in colourful wooden boats.
Experiences here revolve around both stillness and exploration. Guests can take traditional shikara rides through the hidden waterways of Dal Lake, explore Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens, old bazaars, mosques, and mountain villages, or simply spend slow days absorbing the peaceful surroundings from the deck itself. Sukoon also strongly embraces sustainable hospitality, becoming the first houseboat in Kashmir fitted with a bio-tank to prevent lake pollution, while eliminating plastic bottles through purified reverse-osmosis drinking water systems.
