Stok Palace Heritage Hotel

📍 Leh, Ladakh

Towering above the valley of the Singey Sangpo, better known as the Indus River, Stok Palace is one of Ladakh’s most iconic heritage landmarks. Built over 200 years ago and still home to the Namgyal Dynasty, the palace carries centuries of history, culture, and spiritual significance within its walls. Opened to travellers in 1980 with the blessings of the Dalai Lama, the palace today functions as an intimate heritage hotel, allowing guests to step into a living piece of Ladakhi history rather than simply observe it from a distance.

The palace beautifully reflects Ladakh’s architectural and cultural heritage through traditional design, antique-filled interiors, old wooden corridors, handcrafted details, and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valley. The experience feels deeply personal and atmospheric, with every room and hallway carrying traces of the dynasty’s legacy. Alongside the original palace, the newer Zimshag quarters introduce a quieter, more minimal aesthetic that complements the historic structure without taking away from its character.

Accommodation includes six heritage rooms within the palace itself, featuring four Standard Suites, one Royal Suite, and the Queen’s Room. Guests can also stay at the nearby Chulli Bagh Villas located within the gardens. Each space is layered with antique furniture, traditional textiles, artwork, and objects collected over generations, creating an experience that feels authentic rather than overly polished.

One of the most unique aspects of staying at Stok Palace is its deep connection to Himalayan Buddhism and Ladakhi culture. The palace houses a private monastery and the sacred Lhakchung Temple on its upper floor, where resident monks continue to perform daily prayers and rituals. Guests are welcome to quietly observe these ceremonies, offering a rare glimpse into Ladakh’s living spiritual traditions. Nearby sits the 14th-century Stok Gompa monastery, while village walks around the property reveal the region’s simple, sustainable way of life.

Dining at Willow Restaurant celebrates Ladakh’s rich culinary heritage alongside global flavours. Guests can enjoy local dishes like momos, thukpa, skyu, chhutagi, and chhurpe, many prepared using traditional recipes passed down through generations within the royal kitchens. Meals here feel rooted in the landscape, culture, and ingredients of the high Himalayas.

Throughout the year, the palace also remains closely connected to Ladakh’s festivals, rituals, and cultural celebrations, continuing its centuries-old role as an important centre of Ladakhi heritage and storytelling.
