Rhino & River Wildlife

Retreat & Spa📍Guwahati, Assam

Northeast India remains one of the country’s most unexplored regions, yet the beauty hidden within its landscapes is truly breathtaking. Set amidst the lush wilderness of Assam’s Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, with Meghalaya nearby and the mighty Brahmaputra River shaping the terrain, Rhino & River Wildlife Retreat & Spa offers an immersive boutique wilderness experience. What makes the retreat particularly special is its location within one of the highest-density habitats of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros in the world, creating the perfect backdrop for unforgettable rhino safaris and intimate wildlife encounters.

Known for its distinctive Assamese architecture, the property features 16 log-hut-style cottages, eight Tea Garden Rooms, and Safari Rooms inspired by traditional Assamese stilted monsoon homes and indigenous bamboo craftsmanship. Designed in collaboration with award-winning designer Aku Zeliang, the retreat follows the philosophy of “building with the land” rather than against it. Locally sourced bamboo, timber, stone, and cane come together to create lightweight, breathable structures that naturally encourage passive cooling and ventilation. Rustic cottages with private balconies open out to sweeping wilderness landscapes and serene river views, while interiors celebrate the rich craft traditions of Northeast India through handwoven textiles, tribal artistry, and earthy natural materials.

At Rhino & River, local cuisine forms an integral part of the overall experience. Assamese culinary heritage takes centre stage at the retreat’s signature restaurant, Baan Kaahi, a farm-to-table dining space offering curated Assamese tasting menus conceptualised by chef Kashmiri Nath, alongside Indian, Pan-Asian, and Western offerings. Guests can savour regional specialties such as Masor Tenga, Joha Bhaat, and Kola Bora Saul’or Payox, while the Apong Bar serves locally inspired cocktails paired with premium spirits.

The retreat continues to celebrate the cultural essence of the region through a range of immersive experiences. Wellness journeys unfold at the Nirban Spa, inspired by the healing rituals of the Seven Sisters region. Guests can also enjoy tea garden walks, tea plucking and tasting sessions, cultural storytelling evenings accompanied by folk music, village excursions to Mayang and Chanaka, traditional Assamese cooking experiences, as well as bonfire and stargazing evenings under open skies.

While the cultural and wellness offerings are thoughtfully curated, the highlight remains the retreat’s wilderness experiences. Guided jeep and elephant safaris through Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary bring guests close to its famed rhinoceros population, while birdwatching walks with expert naturalists offer deeper insight into the region’s biodiversity. Brahmaputra river safaris, riverside picnics, and fishing experiences with local guides further enhance the connection to Assam’s extraordinary natural landscape.
