Diphlu River Lodge
📍 Kaziranga, Assam
Perched quietly along the banks of the Diphlu River on the edge of Kaziranga National Park, Diphlu River Lodge offers one of the most immersive wildlife stays in India. Surrounded by forests, farmland, riverbanks, and the rich biodiversity of Assam, the eco-sensitive lodge feels deeply connected to the landscape around it. Often regarded as one of the finest safari lodges in the region, the property combines understated comfort with strong conservation values, creating an experience rooted in nature, community, and Assamese heritage.
Set just a 10-minute drive from Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for the world’s largest population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros and one of the highest densities of Royal Bengal Tigers, the lodge serves as an ideal base for wildlife lovers. The property itself has an intimate atmosphere, with only 12 cottages accommodating a maximum of 24 guests at a time, ensuring quietness and exclusivity throughout the stay.
Built on stilts to adapt to the floodplains of the Brahmaputra region, the cottages blend seamlessly into their surroundings through the use of bamboo, wood, rattan, thatched roofs, and locally sourced natural materials. Interiors are simple yet warm, featuring Assamese textiles, handcrafted furniture, cane chairs, writing desks, spacious verandahs, and views overlooking either the Diphlu River or surrounding paddy fields. The design throughout the lodge reflects Assamese cultural heritage while remaining intentionally low-impact and environmentally conscious.
Dining takes place at Machan, the lodge’s elevated riverside restaurant and lounge space, where meals are prepared using produce sourced from the property’s own organic farm. Guests can enjoy Assamese flavours alongside comforting regional cuisine while overlooking the river and the forests of Kaziranga beyond. Evenings often unfold around bonfires with traditional Assamese dance performances, barbecues, and conversations under the stars.
Experiences at Diphlu River Lodge in twice-daily jeep safaris into Kaziranga accompanied by expert naturalists, guests can enjoy tea garden visits, cycling through villages and mustard fields, birdwatching, rubber plantation walks, village visits with local tribal communities, Brahmaputra river excursions, orchid park visits, and picnic breakfasts by the Deopani River. The lodge also houses Lahé Looms, a gift space showcasing handcrafted products created by local artisans and weaving communities.
